Camp Shakespeare Programs
Camp Shakespeare programs offer a unique summer arts adventure for young people ages 5 – 18. They are also an educational (just don’t tell the kids!) introduction to the works of Shakespeare and theatre taught by professional teaching artists. Our focus in Camp Shakespeare is to give campers an experience that builds confidence, encourages teamwork, and unleashes creativity. Camp Shakespeare also improves reading skills, concentration ability, and teaches young people the power and beauty of language. Campers rehearse their own work for a performance of scenes, swordfights, and a shortened version of the Festival’s 2013 play, As You Like It, on the Festival stage in Southmoreland Park. Camp Shakespeare, the Festival's signature education program, is a two-week camp that that builds confidence, encourages teamwork, and unleashes creativity. In 2013, we offer five sessions of Camp in locations throughout the Kansas City metropolitan area. Our focus in Camp Shakespeare is to give young people a hands-on introduction to Shakespeare and the art of theater. Camp curriculum includes history, dance, stage combat, and acting and gives students the opportunity to create their own production of the 2013 Festival play, As You Like It. Camp Shakespeare promises a summer experience they won't ever forget!
Will's Players is a one-week camp designed for our youngest Shakespearians. It's perfect for kids who have participated in Bard Buddies or are brand new to the Bard.
Shakespeare Exploration is a conservatory-styled camp that provides an advanced experience for returning and new teen campers. This conservatory-styled workshop includes in-depth acting work highlighting vocal, physical, and acting techniques used in performing Shakespeare. Campers will focus on acting exercises, text work, rehearsal and performance of monologues and scenes.
Shakespeare Unlimited is specially designed for returning Campers, giving them a deeper study of Shakespeare and a more complex look at scene study, character development, and theater crafts. Students will create their own version of the 2013 play, As You Like It, as well as exploring other Shakespeare plays.
